The Practice of Forest Therapy, has been shown to improve health and well-being.

Have you heard about Shinrin Yoku or Forest bathing? Here is an opportunity to take a walk and experience the practice for yourself. Learn techniques to maximize the health benefits and stress reducing qualities of this walking practice. Shinrin yoku originated in Japan and is gaining popularity in the United States for its documented Health benefits.

This practice takes a walk in the woods to another level. A centering and calming restorative practice, it promotes balance and restored vitality through a quality of presence and heightened sensory awareness. Recent articles have been written up in Oprah, Time Magazine, and National Geographic, as well as numerous other publications. Sugarloaf Ridge State Park hosts a Forest Therapy Series as part of its Parks RX program the 4th Saturday of each month (http://parkrx-sonomacounty.org/events/). ParkRx – BEGINNING Hiking for Fitness Series @ Sugarloaf Ridge State Park

Please Join us for an 8-week BEGINNING Hiking for Fitness Program. The program leaders will guide you on a series of weekly hikes with the challenge increasing each week. Before the first hike, the leader will discuss proper shoes, hydration, incorporating hiking poles, proper pacing, etc. The group’s final hike aims for the picnic table past neptune on Sugarloaf’s Planet Walk, where hikers can enjoy the beautiful vistas.

The Hiking series costs $80, or free (including free parking on Sugarloaf hikes) for hikers with a ParkRx from a Sonoma County Medical Provider. For more information on ParkRx please visit https://parkrx-sonomacounty.org/

1) Sat 8/4–White Barn to Uranus, 2.2 miles, 80 feet
2) Sat 8/11–Spring Lake from Shady Oaks parking lot via Bay Area Ridge Trail, horse trail. 3.2, ca 150 elevation
3) Sat 8/18–Meadow Hillside Loop starting, ending at campground, 3 miles, 250 ft
4) Sat 8/25–Spring Lake / Lake Ralphine loop 4.3 miles 250 starting at Cobblestone parking lot
5) Sat 9/1–Stern Pony Gate and Canyon, Stern Road 3 miles, 500 ft
6) Sat 9/8–Vista Trail loop, 3.6 miles 700 ft
7) Sat 9/15–Community Gardens to East West Café and back, loop 6.5 miles, minimal elevation

This walk is a Healthy Parks Healthy People hike – which connects residents with the health benefits of public parks and open spaces. Bring a water bottle, hat, sunscreen and comfortable shoes. Free hike and free parking for HPHP First Saturday Sugarloaf hikes. The hike starts at the visitors’ center.

Susan Topf’s Yoga Hike balances a mix of hiking and gentle yoga postures, breath work and guided meditation. No mat necessary. Please wear weather appropriate clothing to feel comfortable being in a natural setting. For those familiar with the park, we will most likely be hiking the 2.5 mile Meadow / Hillside Loop with yoga stops in secluded glades, hilltop vistas and tranquil creekside settings. Route varies on weather conditions and group interest. Cost is $20 and includes parking if registered online. Free with Park Rx from participating Sonoma County Medical Provider.
