ParkRx – Hiking for Fitness Series @ Sugarloaf Ridge State Park

Please Join us for an 8-week Hiking for Fitness Program. The program leaders will guide you on a series of weekly hikes with the challenge increasing each week. Before the first hike, the leader will discuss proper shoes, hydration, incorporating hiking poles, proper pacing, etc. The group’s final hike will be to the top of Bald Mountain where hikers can enjoy the stunning 360 vistas.

1) Aug 5: White Barn to Uranus Sugarloaf. 2.2 Miles, 80 ft elevation
2) Aug 12: Meadow Hillside Loop. 3 miles, 250 elevation
3) Aug 19: Stern/Stern Ranch/Pony/Canyon. 3 miles, 500 elevation
4) Aug 26: Vista Trail Loop. 4.5 miles. 700 ft elevation.
5) Sept 2: Neptune Picnic Table. 5 miles. 850 ft elevation.
6) Sept 9: Goodspeed to Bench. 4.2 miles, 1000 ft. elevation.
7) Sept 16: Grey Pine/Red Mt. 5.3 miles. 1200 ft elevation.
8) Sept 23: Climb to Bald Mt. 6.2 Miles 1500 ft. elevation.

ParkRx – Forest Therapy @ Sugarloaf Ridge State Park

Have you heard about Shinrin Yoku or “Forest bathing”?  Here is an opportunity to take a walk, and experience the practice for yourself. Learn techniques to maximize the health benefits and stress reducing qualities, of this walking practice.   Led by certified ANFT (Association of Nature and Forest Therapy) practitioners.

Shinrin yoku translates as “forest bathing” or Forest Therapy, (an immersion in the beneficial influences of nature), and is a practice that originated in Japan and is gaining popularity in the United States as well as internationally for it’s documented Health benefits. This practice takes “a walk in the woods” to another level. A very centering and calming restorative practice, promoting balance and restored vitality through a quality of presence and heightened sensory awareness. Recent articles have been written up in Oprah, Time Magazine, and National Geographic, as well as numerous other publications.

Check the links below for more information about the practice and in specific it’s restorative support for emotional calm, meditation, balance, blood pressure, cardio, cholesterol, sleep/anxiety, and stress reduction.

Come experience what all the interest is about. Sugarloaf State Park hosts a Forest Therapy Series as part of its Parks RX program. The last Saturday of each month 9:30 to 12:30 May through November.

Yoga Hike @ Sugarloaf Ridge State Park

Susan Topf’s Yoga Hike balances a mix of hiking and gentle yoga postures, breath work and guided meditation. No mat necessary. Please wear weather appropriate clothing to feel comfortable being in a natural setting. For those familiar with the park, we will most likely be hiking the 2.5 mile Meadow / Hillside Loop with yoga stops in secluded glades, hilltop vistas and tranquil creekside settings. Route varies on weather conditions and group interest. Cost is $20 including parking if registered online. All levels and ages welcome.
